A facet (in the Faceted Curriculum Project) is a way of viewing a block. By using facets, the same mathematical content can be presented and viewed with different audiences and purposes in mind. In order to view the list of facet types, please go to the facet directory.

Creation of a New Facet Type

Facets should be created when there is sufficient demand, and when such a facet is applicable throughout all blocks. New facets should be defined as new categories, such as "FCP Math Facet", which are subcategories of the category "FCP Facet". In creating a new facet type, the following issues must be addressed and written in the category description:

1. The intended audience: Both the role of the audience, and the assumed mathematical background of the audience.
2. Writing qualifications: Who may write such a facet. What qualifications are required?
3. Content guidelines: How to write facets of a type in consistent style and notation.
4. Usage guidelines: How the facet may be used by the intended audience.

Facet Ontologies

Once a new facet type is created, facets of that type should be created for as many blocks as possible. One should always include the semantic information to answer the question "what block does the facet look at?". For example, use the following:

 [[Looks at::Faceted Curriculum Project/B1]] 

in the facet text, in order to specify that the facet applies to Block 1. A facet should only look at one block.
